Reviewed by the ThermoPest technical team · Last reviewed October 2026

When a resident or guest reports bed bugs, record what they tell you, report it to the right team the same day, and make sure the homes or rooms beside, above and below are flagged for checking. Advise them not to move furniture between rooms, not to throw items out unwrapped, and not to use foggers or shop-bought sprays, which can scatter bed bugs and make treatment harder.

What should happen on the day?

On the day of a report

1

Record

Who, where, what they’ve seen, and for how long.

2

Check

Look for signs if you can and take photos.

3

Report today

To your pest or repairs team, using your process.

4

Flag neighbours

Rooms or homes beside, above and below.

5

Advise

Give simple advice and say what happens next. In a hotel, take the room out of use.

What should people do (and not do) while they wait?

While they wait for treatment

Do

  • Keep sleeping in their own bed if they can, so bed bugs stay in one place
  • Wash bedding and clothes at 60°C and tumble dry on a hot setting for at least 30 minutes
  • Reduce clutter around the bed

Don’t

  • Move to another room or sleep on the sofa
  • Use foggers, smoke bombs or shop-bought sprays
  • Throw out furniture without wrapping and arranging direct collection
  • Take furniture or bedding to other rooms or homes

If staying in their own bed is causing serious distress, they should tell you so you can get them help.
